The Linn Street Cafe is a seventy-seat, fine dining restaurant specializing in contemporary American cuisine. It is located in Iowa City, Iowa–a town of approximately 60,000, most of whom are connected to the University of Iowa. Thus, our clientele is highly educated and cultured. They appreciate good food and good wine and compare us to restaurants in Chicago, San Francisco, and New York. The Linn Street Cafe has established the reputation of being “the place” to dine in our community, and some say in the whole state of Iowa as well. This reputation is largely accredited to our wine selection, and our cuisine.
We are in our fifteenth year of ownership of the restaurant. We continue to keep our list with approximately 200 selections. We realize that creating and updating a wine list involves an uncomprised commitment of time in research for even the most experienced of connoisseurs. We spend copious amounts of time studying wine literature, talking to distributors and attending wine tastings.
To this end, we frequently enlist the help of wholesalers to conduct in-house wine tastings, encourage our staff to browse through current and past issues of Wine Spectator, allow them to sample all of our new wines and we welcome their suggestions and frequently include them on our list. Because we have the most extensive wine-list in Iowa City, we also feel the responsibility to educate our community. Since taking over ownership, we have had several wine tastings, and “wine dinners,” consisting of several-course meals paired with the best and most exciting new wines available.
Our current inventory is approximately 1,500 bottles; most of which are stored in a temperature-controlled wine cellar. We continue to increase our wine sales in the past year and we plan to continue our commitment to offering our customers the best wines available by purchasing and storing more wines to improve future wine lists.
Sincerely
Frank Bowman
